NEWs

So no one will suspect.

A couple weeks ago I heard back from WNPR. I didn't get the producer job that I interviewed for. I was fairly upset for an evening, but I'm happy to report that I picked myself up with an "everything happens for a reason" mantra. John Dankosky, the news director, had a host of positive things to say to me ("you made the decision so hard"... "we wish there were two positions"... etc.) and asked that I keep in touch about my freelance work and other creative projects. The senior producer, Catie Talarski, also emailed me a few days ago... thanking me for coming and telling me how nice I am and how I was really supportive on a crazy day at the station, etc. I am very pleased that they liked my personality, but I would have much preferred they wanted me as their producer. Ha. All in all, the epic interview was a wonderful experience. If nothing else, I learned that I can totally handle a producer's work. I assumed I could considering my work on Sealed, but sitting in on an entire workday confirmed my suspicions. Good.

Shortly after I got this news, I was in a "well, what the heck now?" zone. I may or may not have called my mom. I may or may not have flipped out that I'll never be paid to do the work I love. So, a little later that day, I got the following voicemail from her... thanks, Mom. (For those reading this post in an RSS reader or on Facebook, the embedded audio files don't come through. If you want to hear my Mama's sweet voice... click through to the actual post.)

UPDATE: I didn't know where the little tune she sang came from, so I called and asked. Turns out it is a lovely sampling from The King and I. Here's the song in its entirety: I Whistle a Happy Tune.

gahhhhhhhhh. suckfest. i was really wanting that for you. It's one of those situations where there are so few jobs for the number of creative people like you who are so capable of filling them.

see you soon.
